Sirmione: A Historical Gem with Thermal Wonders

Lake Garda: Sirmione

After an hour of unattractive driving from Milan, the small road that leads to Sirmione is a pleasant reward. The car glides between vineyards and olive groves, with glimpses of the turquoise waters!

As we approached, we saw the towers of a castle in the background! No wonder it is considered one of the most beautiful cities on the lake and mentioned in all the blogs.

We parked the car at the hotel, then strolled through the fortress gate, entering the historic center. On one side are narrow, picturesque streets with colorful houses and typical shops. On the other, small boats and motorboats glide serenely across the lake.

Arriving in Sirmione is an enchanting experience! A perfect combination of history, nature, and Italian charm!

Venture to the Scaliger Castle, an imposing medieval fortress that dominates the landscape! Admire incredible panoramic views.

In the 13th century, the Castle transformed the town into a strategic hub and shaped its development.

Climb the 400 steps to the tower for panoramic views of Lake Garda and the town. But beware of the narrow and steep stone stairs!

Stroll the streets of the historic center, window shopping. Have a Gelato at one of the countless gelato shops in the city.

Soak in the thermal waters known for healing properties, relax and rejuvenate. If your hotel does not have a sulfur pool, head to Terme di Sirmione. Let the mineral-rich baths soothe your body and mind.

At the end of the day, indulge in authentic Italian cuisine at one of the charming local trattorias. They offer a variety of typical dishes, including the delicious risotto with fish.

I recommend Al Pescatore, where you can savor a delicious fish while admiring the lake view!

Where to Stay in Sirmione

We stayed at Lake Garda for 10 days! Sirmione was one of our bases for exploring the entire southern part of the lake. It is one of the best places to stay due to its location, infrastructure, and city beauty.

We stayed at the Grand Hotel Terme, which was amazing! The room, service, and breakfast were excellent. The bonus? The sulfur pool in front of the lake!!

Planning your trip to Sirmione

  • If you are not staying in Sirmione and want to spend the day, do not go on a Sunday! The line of cars at the entrance to the town was endless. A real crowd trying to find a space to drive.

  • If you are driving, try not to stay in the old town. It is hard to drive among the hordes of tourists!
