The Most Beautiful Hilltop Villages You Need to Visit
With so many charming hilltop villages, deciding which ones to visit can be difficult. To help, here are some of the most beautiful ones you need to add to your travel bucket list.
Gordes France: Provençal charm on the top of the hill
One of the most beautiful villages in Provence and classified as one of the most beautiful villages in France. It is known for its charming white limestone houses and narrow streets. On top of a hill, 340 meters above sea level, it offers impressive views of the lavender fields and olive trees of the Luberon Valley. It is a perfect destination for those looking for rustic charm.
Explore the Château de Gordes, a medieval castle turned art museum. Immerse yourself in Sénanque Abbey, a 12th-century Cistercian retreat.
Gordes is surrounded by olive groves and vineyards, a distinctly Provencal landscape. Don't be fooled by its simplicity! There are several award-winning restaurants in the region!
If you're passionate about wine, you'll be captivated by the abundance of vineyards and wine cellars in the exquisite region of Luberon. The main grapes for white wine are Grenache Blanc, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Ugni Blanc, and Vermentino
If you plan to travel through Provence or Côte d' Azur, don't forget to include Gordes in your itinerary. It is less than 1 hour from Avignon or just under 2 hours from Marseille! The road to Avignon is worth every minute. Beautiful!
Civita di Bagnoregio, Italy - the "Dying City"
Bagnoregio is a medieval village perched on top of a volcanic tuff cliff. Accessible only by a narrow bridge, it offers a sense of isolation and mystery. It is an ideal place for history and architecture lovers.
Due to its location on top of a rock formation that is constantly eroding, it is called the "dying city. The action of time has caused the collapse of the city's edges, which have been shrinking over the centuries.
The city is rich in history. Its isolation helped preserve medieval architecture. And the lifestyle of the few inhabitants who still live there remains intact.
Get lost in its cobblestone streets and admire the tuff houses! Visit the Bishop's Palace, a 16th-century landmark with breathtaking views. Explore ancient rock-cut cellars and small chapels.
The surreal and melancholic atmosphere of Civita di Bagnoregio makes it a photographer's dream!
120 km from Rome, you can reach Bagnoregio by train or car in less than 2 hours. Combine the two most charming Italian villages, Bagnoregio and Pitigliano, in a single trip. They are less than an hour away!
Ronda, Spain - the city of contrasts
Ronda is famous for its dramatic location, divided by a deep gorge. Cross the bridge Puente Nuevo, which connects both sides of the city, and offers spectacular views. The bridge took 42 years to complete and is an impressive feat of 18th-century engineering.
Ronda is rich in history and culture. You will find charming squares, ancient churches, and the famous Plaza de Toros.
In the mountains of Andalusia, it offers a unique blend of Moorish and Spanish influences.
Ronda pulses with contrasts. On one side, the Old Town. A labyrinth of white streets and Moorish houses, with the iconic Plaza de Toros, one of the oldest in Spain.
On the other, the New City is vibrant and modern. Visit the Ponte Nueva, an 18th-century engineering masterpiece that spans the El Tajo Gorge.
Monuments such as Arab baths and remains from prehistoric settlements of the Neolithic period, make Ronda a fascinating destination. The town is a good base for exploring the nearby Sierra de las Nieves Natural Park. Enjoy hiking, bird watching, and the natural beauty of the Andalusian countryside.
You can get to Ronda from Seville or Málaga, the closest airports. From there, rent a car and take the opportunity to visit the entire region..
Medieval charms of Mont Saint Michel in France
Mont Saint-Michel is a small rocky island off the coast of Normandy. It is crowned by a Benedictine abbey and surrounded by defensive walls. During the high tide, the island seems to float in the sea, creating a magical sight.
Known as the "Wonder of the Western World, it has narrow streets, charming shops, and a stunning sea.
The tides surrounding Mont Saint-Michel add to its mystical allure. The island can be accessed on foot during low tide but is surrounded by water at high tide.
Walk to the village, and after a long staircase (365 steps), you will reach the abbey.
Find out about tide times and stay one night at Mont St Michel. Watching the tide come in is a spectacle in itself! In 20 minutes, the Monte becomes an island!
A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the island has been a pilgrimage destination for centuries. It is also one of the most visited tourist attractions in France. And as such, it is absolutely crowded..
Try to arrive early or late in the day to see the tides and buy your abbey ticket online. Despite the several parking lots, they fill up quickly.
Everything is very organized. A free bus leaves every 5 minutes, taking you from the parking lots to the bottom of the hill. If you're fit, walk in 40 minutes, then face the 365 steps to the abbey. The walk along the beach is beautiful.
Mont St Michel is 4 hours by car or train from Paris. You can spend a night and return, or enjoy and discover Normandy and/or Brittany. The northern regions of France are simply sensational!
Pitigliano: discovering authentic Tuscany:
itigliano, Italy, is a charming Etruscan village perched on a cliff in Tuscany. It is known for its picturesque scenery and rich history. Pitigliano is called Little Jerusalem due to its historical connection with the Jewish community.
Explore the Jewish Quarter, one of the best preserved in Europe. Visit the San Gregorio Cathedral, a beautiful example of Baroque architecture. Indulge in authentic Tuscan cuisine! Admire the sun setting over the valley, creating a spectacle of lights and colors.
The experience at the synagogue left a profound impression on me. One of the few intact, it is adorned with golden wood and is still in use. It is the only place in the city with 2 armed police officers for security.
The mix of cultural heritage and natural beauty makes Pitigliano a hidden gem!
Arriving at the village is spectacular! A narrow road and suddenly, looking up, a city almost teetering on a cliff. Have lunch at one of the square's restaurants, with incredible views.
Explore the open-air museum Alberto Manzi, which contains several Etruscan necropolises. Amazing visit!
Pitigliano has a network of underground tunnels dug into the region's soft tuff. They served as shelters for residents during wars and conflicts.
No tour of Tuscany can leave Pitigliano out. And, as I mentioned above, take the opportunity to get to know Bagnoregio too! The village is just over two hours drive from Rome.
Exploring hilltop villages: tips and tricks
Visiting a hilltop village is a unique and rewarding experience, challenging though. Here are some tips and tricks to help you make the most of your trip.
Wear comfortable shoes
The steep and often uneven streets of hilltop villages can be difficult to walk. Wear comfortable and sturdy shoes. High heels and sandals are not recommended as they can be dangerous on winding streets.
Cobblestones can be slippery when wet. And many villages have stairs and slopes that require appropriate footwear.
Prepare for the weather.
Prepare for sudden temperature changes. Bring a hat and sunscreen to protect yourself from the sun and a raincoat or umbrella in case of unexpected rain. Dressing in layers is always the best alternative.
Note that many of these villages have little street shelter. A lightweight, foldable raincoat or umbrella can save your life during sudden downpours. A wide-brimmed hat can protect you from the midday sun.
Embrace local culture
One of the best ways to experience a village is to embrace the local culture. Try the cuisine, attend a festival, and interact with the friendly villagers. You will develop an understanding of the city's history and way of life.
Exploring the architectural heritage of European villages
Gordes, Bagnoregio, Ronda, Mont Saint-Michel, and Pitigliano are hidden gems in Europe. Each of them has its unique history, culture, and beauty. When you visit these villages, you will experience authentic European rural life. A cultural journey through the historical charms of Europe!
